Car Maintenance Checklist: 7 Things To Keep In Mind

Our vehicles take us everywhere, so we need to keep up regular maintenance. This can be done at an authorized company service center or by a trusted mechanic.

Here is a basic checklist for the maintenance of your vehicle:

car Air Conditioner
The air conditioner provides comfort for the passengers so you want to keep it in good working order for those long drives. You need a good air conditioner for those hot sticky days so check for these potential problems:

  • mechanical problems
  • below level refrigeration
  • air contamination
  • blockages in the tubes
  • dirt in the condenser

car Brakes
Beyond a doubt this is the most important part of the car is the brake service for safety reasons. You have to keep your brakes in good working order. Brake problems tend to grow over time so you have to find them early and get them fixed. Check for:

  • working parking brake
  • sufficient brake fluid levels
  • working hand brakes
  • complete braking equipment including brake pedals

car Cooling System
This system stops the engine from overheating. A good cooling system will protect the engine and keep the temperature normal. You need a good coolant for the engine. The level has to be checked one every two weeks. In the warmer months you should check, once a week. Remember that the engine is the heart of the car so check for the following:

  • oil level
  • coolant level
  • Thermostat
  • Belts
  • air filter
  • spark plugs

car Fuel System
The fuel system is just as important. It reduces the chance of the vehicle breaking down and eating up too much gas. Here you should check:

  • clogged fuel lines and filters
  • places where the car fills fuel
  • the other parts of the fuel system

Remember to use the grade of motor oil that the manufacturer recommends. If you use different motor oil you lower you gas mileage by 1-2%.

car Gears
The gears help to maintain the cars speed and the clutch fully pushed when changing gears. Some things to look for are:

  • do not force the gears
  • check transmission fluid
  • drive at the correct gear and speed
  • regularly grease the gears

car Tires
Remember that tires should be part of your vehicle maintenance schedule. If they are worn the car can skid so make sure to check the following:

  • tread patterns should be similar
  • enough air pressure
  • replace old tires with new ones
  • balance tire rim regularly

Did you know that by keeping your tires inflated and aligned can improve your gas mileage by at least 3.3%? Replacing your air filters will also improve your gas mileage by as much as 10% and protect your engine.

car Electrical System
As part of the car tune up you should check this system which is made up of the battery, alternator, starter and fuses. Any problems could cause the car to stall and leave you stranded. Here are some tips:

  • change the car battery every four years
  • tighten the cables
  • check the batteries water level
  • check the alternator, fuses and car starter
